Steve Renouf
It would be hard to find a better Bronco in the club’s history than The Pearl.
One of the sport’s greatest centres, Steve Renouf set numerous records for Brisbane in a brilliant career that yielded four Premierships.
Something of a try-scoring machine, Renouf ran with such speed, finesse and flair that Roy Masters was moved to say “you sensed this is how God wants football to be played!” With ball in hand, he would dash forward like an express train. Despite earnest effort, chasers rarely caught The Pearl when he set out for the try-line, imploring himself: “Take me, legs!”
It was one of the great long-range tries in history when he ran 95m to score in the 1992 grand final – Steve Renouf magic.
He didn’t much go for all the training, but he loved playing – that was clear to see – and supporters (and even those from the opposition) loved watching.
Life has thrown up some hurdles along the way, but Steve has met the challenges with courage and stoicism. He’s a likeable bloke, a true NRL legend and he has a fascinating story to tell.
