Steve Mortimer
Steve Mortimer was one of the giants of NSW rugby league, a dedicated team-first player and brilliant half-back for club, state and country.
Turvey was a loyal Bulldog – a one-club man and Premiership captain with Canterbury. His performances in the 1980 and 1985 victories were vintage Mortimer. In the 1980 decider he saved three certain Eastern Suburbs tries through superb cover tackles – his trademark. In the 1985 Grand Final, it was Mortimer’s captaincy and direction that controlled field position and possession as Canterbury pummelled St George into submission.
Many say Mortimer was the man who restored state pride to the Blues jersey. Turvey led his beloved state team to their first Origin victory and will be forever regarded as the most passionate New South Welshmen to ever grace the Origin arena. Yet, he led the team and savoured the wins with great humility.
Turvey made his Australian debut in 1981 and played in eight Test matches against France, New Zealand and England, scoring two tries in his Test debut.
Steve Mortimer enjoyed thirteen years at the top level of Rugby League. He is best remembered for his unbridled enthusiasm, superb tackling and brilliant captaincy. Turvey was also a recipient of the Australian Sports Medal and named in Australia’s 100 Greatest Players. It’s as good a resume as any sportsman in the country.
Get him along to your place and be regaled by his fascinating stories of a brilliant career well played.
