Gene Miles
Gene Miles could have dominated any sport. His size and elite ball-handling would have made him a brilliant point guard in the NBA or a champion key forward in the AFL. Fortunately for League, Miles plied his trade on a rectangular field as one of the best twenty players ever to don the Broncos shirt, chosen in the Queensland Rugby League’s Team of the Century and named as one of Australia’s 100 Greatest Players. That’s a CV to be mighty proud of.
He was also one of The Invincibles which crushed Great Britain on that memorable 1982 tour.
Geno was a fast and skillful heavyweight centre, noted for his ability to use his height to his advantage. He was particularly skilled in passing off-loading the ball with a distinctive one-handed basketball style. Geno was a vital original signing at the Broncos, at the time the No.1 centre in the game and one of its most feared players. Big, strong and intimidating, Miles finished his career at the club in the second row and his only regret is not figuring in a premiership with the Broncos.
Geno’s a Brisbane legend. Still heavily involved in the game, the Big Unit loves talking about the game and particularly his twenty Origin matches. He was always a Big Headache for the boys in blue!
